ॐ asana pronunciations made easy ॐ

Sanskrit pronunciations are an integral part of yoga, and even though they are proper nouns, and a little deviation is allowed...It is always better to learn to use our articulators (mouth, tongue, palate, teeth etc.) correctly, and to know which syllable to stress on, so that we can pronounce the word correctly.

We tend to look at spellings and not listen to the sounds of the sunskrit संस्कृत (not SAN-skrit) pronunciations for yoga poses. Technically, in Devanagari, the word is asan (I prefer to write asun) आसन  and NOT asana.

Unlike English, in Hindi/Sanskrit, the way we pronounce a word is exactly the way it is spelled which leaves no ambiguity. When converting Sanskrit or Hindi words into English, the pronunciations change  and are often mispronounced.

Unlike most other sites, I have rhymed the SUN-skrit (not SANS-krit) words with English words so that the pronunciation is easier to replicate.
...for example, the word NAMASTE is commonly mispronounced, and tends to sound like NAM-uh-stay, however the sound is NUM which is similar to the sound of the English word NUMB.
AUM or OM tends to be mispronounced however the sound resembles the word home (minus the 'h' sound).

Please click on the YouTube videos to access the correct pronunciations as per the Devanagiri script.
