ॐ asana pronunciations made easy ॐ
The Art of Sacred SoundSanskrit pronunciations are an integral part of yoga. While a small deviation is often accepted in the West, there is profound power in learning to use our articulators (the mouth, tongue, palate, and teeth) to honor the true vibration of the language.
Often, we rely too heavily on English spellings rather than listening to the authentic sounds of Sunskrit (संस्कृत). For example, in the Devanagari script, the word for pose is technically Asun (आसन), not "Asana."
Unlike English, Sanskrit and Hindi are phonetic; they are pronounced exactly as they are written, leaving no room for ambiguity. However, when these words are transliterated into English, the essence is often lost.
To bridge this gap, I have paired these sacred sounds with familiar English rhymes to make the correct pronunciation effortless to replicate:
sunskrit garudasan
numaste adho mukh svanasan
muntra prasarita padottanasan
anjaneyasan siddhasan
baddha konasan vrksasan
chuckra bodhichitta
ardha chandrasan sadhana
ardha matsyendrasan dharma
chaturang dandasan guru
utkatasan thadasun
virabhadrasan bhujangasan
trikonasan sarvangasan
makarasan salabasan
dhanurasan tantric
buddha bodhisattva
tantra karma

- Namaste: Often mispronounced as "NAM-uh-stay," the first syllable should rhyme with the English word NUMB.
- AUM/OM: This sacred sound resembles the word HOME (simply remove the "H" sound)
